Planespotting at Dockweiler Beach

Nestled along the Pacific Ocean just south of Marina del Rey, Dockweiler is not only a haven for beachgoers but also a prime location for aviation enthusiasts (avgeeks) waiting to view the departures from LAX. As planes take off westward over the Pacific, the beach provides a front-row seat for planespotting.
Planespotting Tips
Dockweiler State Beach is a long stretch of beach & the best spot is right at the parking lot at the main entrance. It is $7.00 & have several lots to choose from. Start right by the entrance for plenty of directly overhead shots of the planes.
You can enjoy the views on the beach with binoculars while you sunbath or if you plane to photograph the planes then best to stay by your car for the sturdy ground support & not risk damaging your camera.
Try Different Spots
Once you paid to enter you can park at the different lots & get different views. I go in the off season & during the week so I don’t worry about crowds.
Time of Day
The warmer the light the better so best to go late afternoon. A nice warm glow will highlight the aircraft & stay for the lovely sunset over the sea.
Use Flight Tracker Apps
You can sit back & enjoy the views but if you want to know what to expect & ID an aircraft there are apps like Flight Aware & Flight Rader. You can also join the sites & share your photos.
I highly recommend this spot since you can plan an afternoon for swimming, sunbathing & having a picnic. There are bathrooms which is a plus since other popular planespotting don’t.
